You guys gave me some marvelous recommendations for reading material. Some I have heard of and read, others are new to me and I will be searching some of them out!
If there is any doubt that I am not a vivacious reader, I snapped a few pics of my stacks yesterday just to show you. I have a very hard time getting rid of books that I have read. Normally, if I find an author that I like, I end up reading everything they have ever written. I have entire works of Maeve Binchy, Fern Michaels, Anne Rice, Luanne Rice – well the list just keeps going. One of my favorite books that I’ve read in the last 10 years or so is “The Color of Water.” It was an Oprah Book Club read and I thoroughly enjoyed every page. Much to my amazement, it was required reading for Mallory this year in one of her classes. I probably enjoyed it more than she did, but I found the biography mesmerizing. I will read most anything, but Tom Clancy, Stephen King, anything along those lines. I love fiction that evolves around historical events, and I particularly love ongoing stories that bring the characters back from one book to the other. I think that’s why I like Luanne Rice so much! Someone mentioned Kris Radish in their comment – well, I have just found her stuff in the last few months. For those of you who love to chic books, I highly recommend “Annie Freeman’s Fabulous Traveling Funeral.” Actually, after reading this book, I think a Traveling Funeral would be just fine with me!
This is my original bookcase. We bought a set of three of these when we were first married. I have been allowed to have one over all these years. As you can see, some of these books are very old and have been well read. I can’t bring myself to part with any of them. Most of the books here go back some 30+ years.
Here is what is sitting on my night stand now. These are the books I have picked to read next, but in no particular order. Some more might be thrown on top and reshuffled. The pile on the right is my “read next” pile. The one on the left is always what I’m reading now.
Next we have the books that I’ve read in the last 13 years. This is the shelf over my bed.
The shelf I threw up on the wall to hold more. hehe — See the coup stick, I made that at Girl Scout Day Camp when Kate was probably in the 4th grade. I think that was the last year I worked a Day Camp and may have been our last year in scouts. Geesh that was a long time ago! She’s in her fourth year of college now!
The piles I have started on my old sewing machine because I thought the shelves couldn’t hold anymore. This is the new place where I add the books when I finish reading them.
I do believe that I need to find a way to put all of these books into some type of order and probably in some new book cases. Some day! Oh wait, these don’t even take into account that I once had every murder mystery written by Agatha Christie. LOVE them! However, they were in the basement in a box and we got a little water in the storage room one year. Needless to say, they were all pitched without me knowing it!
All the women in my family are readers, as well as my husband. Luckily out daughters have inherited our love of reading. I love it when I see them sitting around reading a book! AND yes, I still have all of their books from childhood. They are all in the basement on racks — and I can’t part with them either. I might have grandchildren one day!
So tell me, do you think we should start of a book club? Oh know, I didn’t just ask that! Tongue in cheek it was!

I love to read, too. If I could find a way to read and stamp at the same time–I would. DH sees all of our books as extra insulation for our home (important in northern MI).
Wow…I thought I had a lot of books! I know how you feel though! Although I don’t think I have ever re-read one of my books it’s really hard to part with them. Mine grace many a book shelf and table top too…and dressers and desks and floors…

I am right along with you – I thought I had a lot. Mine are on book shelves, table tops, nightstands, the overflow is on the floor. It amazing how fast they multiply. How do you store them neatly and attractively is my quest. I can not part with them either. I have read a few twice but have such a pile to be read I am not sure that I won’t be able to read anymore twice.
I would love a giant wall of shelves to house them all on attractively. Not the piles of dusty books I have. Did I say dusty! I love to stamp not dust!
Oh well – Books are a good thing. Glad to hear others have my passion.
my sister can rival your collection. i did not see any books by Janet Evonavich…she writes the Stephanie Plum books. they are a must since they are so hysterically funny. my other favorite author is Jodi Picoult.
We must be related….or maybe we were in a former life…us and Shirley MacLaine! My mouth is watering and my head is spinning just looking at all those books! And my nightstand looks EXACTLY like yours except under my lamp instead of a box is just another stack of books! Thankfully I passed along my love of reading to my younger daughter who credits that totally for her being a National Merit Scholar.
Whoa! That’s a lot of books! I love Fannie Flagg. *sorry, that one caught my attention* My oldest is a reader. She’ll have 3 books going at one time. (she’s 10).
Sherry – you are a woman after my own heart – I love books and I noticed the Fannie Flagg one you are reading now. That book is WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL!! I’ve read it twice and I’ve reread all of Fannie’s books several times. She is a great writer, you can’t help but love the characters in her books and you just want them to go on and on…. kinda like this message!! LOL — your blog is such and inspiration. Your blog had me chuckling this morning!! I’m in the process of moving. Last night I was unpacking the last 3 boxes of books. Somehow they all fit in my book cases before I moved. I even took over 100 books to the Friends of the Library – BUT THEY DON’T FIT NOW!!! I’m still scratching my head over that one!! 😀

I love to read. I have been on a biography kick for awhile now. but some of my fav reads are Nora Roberts, Kathleen Woodiwiss, Jody Piccoult, and Beatrice Small just to name a very few. Actually I will read the telephone book if I have nothing else LOL
I recognize quite a few of your books that are also in my collection. I also have quite a collection of books that I just can’t/won’t part with. To get rid of them would be like giving away my friends. It just won’t happen. I love to re-read my favorite books (“Gone With The Wind,”, “Rebecca,” “Secret Garden,” anything by Maeve Binchy–just to name a few).

Hey fellow bibliophile! You need what I have: a wall of bookshelves (I have ten & counting) In my imagination they are hand built and reach the ceiling so I need one of those snazzy sliding ladders–In the real world they are the cheapest Ikea shelves I could find lined up beside each other. Love all of the books! I have always been a big reader but since kids it’s kind of taken a back seat. Recently I’ve been able to start reading again, and I’m so happy.
DD is also a HUGE reader and she is only 6! I love it!! My mom would be so proud.

ok…LOVE Fannie Flagg and haven’t read that one yet! I’m guessing it will be a great read! I am so envious of your book collection! I am not in a rush to get past this stage in my childrens lives but looking forward to the day there is a bit more time for a good book! Take care! 🙂
I feel so much better! I have packing boxes of books to read yet and many I have read on various shelves. I thought I would take the award for ” the one who dies with the most books”. I’ve thinned out the fabric, yarn, paint, and stamps. The books still collect!

WOW! ! ! I read a lot too, but I take my books a Christian bookstore for their used book rack. I live in a 2 br mobile and can hardly store my stamping stuff let alone books:(
