Good morning and welcome to the third Design-abilities blog hop! We are the Spellbinders® Blog Team and we wanted to do something fresh, fun and creative to bring our team together. But before we get started we want to let you know this blog hop is just for fun and creative inspiration. We are not sponsored by Spellbinders Paper Arts®.

Sometimes we might not all be able to participate but we would still encourage you to visit all of the Blog Team Members and check out their blogs. You will find all kinds of ideas for die cutting, paper crafting, mixed media, DIY projects, jewelry, home decor, lots of tutorials and techniques. As designers we are always inspired by each other and we hope to inspire you too.

Including me, the Spellbinders Blog Team consists of:

My project today is another plaque made from chipboard.

Feb2014SCBelievePlaqueWM

Using Spellbinders® Grand Labels Four, 5 pieces of chipboard were die cut and glued together. A thin coat of white embossing paste was added to the top for texture and to make the plaque resemble slate. Once the embossing paste was dry, the plaque was painted with Lowe’s Pantone Cloud Dancer acrylic paint.

I don’t know if you can tell from the photo, but the embossing paste did not entirely cover the chipboard panel. The edges were sanded to remove some of the paint, and then sponged with Gathered Twigs Distress Ink.

The flowers were die cut/embossed from watercolor paper using Rose Creations and Jewel Flowers and Flourishes.

BelievePlaqueCloseUpFlowers

The foliage was painted with Bundled Sage and Peeled Paint; the rose with Mustard Seed and Wild Honey; and the Jewel Flowers with Peacock Feathers. Inside the Jewel Flowers are vintage buttons that I found in my stash that still have bits of thread attached to them.

The sentiment “Believe” was cut from black vinyl using the Silhouette Cameo. (I told you I was hooked on the vinyl aspect of this machine!)

That’s all for me today! Thanks for stopping by and don’t forget to visit the other members of the Spellbinders Blog Team! I can’t wait to see what they’ve created for this hop!

Note to my sister, Carrie: Did I get the colors right for your new furniture? I threw in some of that yellow color because you didn’t get the gold couch!

Before I begin with the details on my project, let me tell you about the Blog Hop and Challenge.

QueenofHearts_2014

There are prizes to be won along with a challenge!   Our schedule (in case you missed the first day) is as follows:

For a chance to win here on my blog, leave a comment below before midnight PST February 14, 2014.  A winner will be randomly chosen from my list of comments and your name will be posted on February 15, 2014.  For more details AND to enter in the Queen of Hearts Challenge, please visit the Quietfire Creations Blog.

Now for my project which was inspired by a home décor piece that I saw on Zulily!

QoHWelcome2

The base for the plaque was die cut from chipboard using Spellbinders® Grand Labels Eleven.  Six individual pieces were die cut and then glued together to form one panel.  A light coat of white embossing paste was added on the top to give the plaque structure as well as to make the plaque resemble resin or a harder surface.  Once the embossing paste was dry, the plaque was painted with Pantone Cloud Dancer Valspar paint from Lowe’s.  (If you have not read it here before, I’ve been purchasing sample Valspar paints from Lowe’s for use in my mixed media projects . . . it works great and is cheap!)

The edges of the plaque were sanded down to reveal the chipboard underneath that was not covered with embossing paste.  The edges were then sponged with Gathered Twigs distress ink, with the excess being wiped away with a baby wipe (which I do purchase by the case).

The “welcome” sentiment is a digital die cut designed by Suzanne Cannon for Silhouette.  All of Quietfire’s stamps and digital die cuts are hand calligraphy by Suzanne . . . they are not fonts but unique works of art!  “Welcome” was cut from black vinyl and applied to the front of the plaque.

QoHWelcomeCloseUpSentiment

The flowers (all die cut from watercolor paper) were made with Rose Creations and Jewel Flowers and Flourishes.  The rose was colored with Festive Berries Distress Stain with a hit of Rock Candy Distress Stickles added later.  The smaller flowers (Jewel Flowers) were colored with Weathered Wood and Tumbled Glass.  Wire was added to the center and just a hint of Faded Jeans Distress Stickles was added for more color.  Oh and the edges were sponged with Dusty Concord.

That’s Spellbinders new release, Foliage Flourish, under the flowers.  It was also die cut from watercolor paper and then painted with Forest Moss and Bundled Sage Distress Paint.  The edges of the flourish and the leaves (from Bitty Blossoms) were sponged with Gathered Twigs.

To finish off the project, black annealed wire was added as a hanger.

Project Supplies:

Good Monday morning!  I hope everyone had a great weekend and you were able to stay warm wherever you are.

There’s a new toy in the studio . . . I finally bit the bullet and ordered a Silhouette Cameo!  Oh my BADness . . . I have a feeling that there are going to be lots of vinyl projects coming up once I figure everything out!  One of the main reasons I ended up taking a closer look at the Cameo, is because Suzanne at Quietfire Design has started to make calligraphy digital cutting files which are available in the Silhouette Online Store.   You can see them all here at Suzanne Cannon’s Profile Page.

Today I have my first project using one of Suzanne’s files, xoxo – calligraphy, along with my favorite Spellbinders®.

ValentineGiftBox

Using the Mini Pizza Box (as detailed in this post), I created a small treat box for Valentine’s Day.   The box was made with a pink cardstock, which I found to be too bright for my liking.  I ended up misting the box with White Linen Dylusions Spray and sponging the edges with Antique Linen, in order to tone down the bright pink.  (Guess I’m not much of a pink girl.)

Using the new Spellbinders Belly Band 2, a band was die cut/embossed from the same pink.   Majestic Labels One was used to die cut/emboss and piece of MME Lost  & Found paper for the base of the tag on the top of the box.

ValentineGiftBoxBellyBand

Labels One was was used to die cut/emboss two additional pieces of designer paper and two pieces of chipboard (which were glued together).

ValentineGiftBoxBellyBand2

One piece of the floral paper was glued to the chipboard panel, which was then glued to the bottom of the Majestic Labels One panel.  (I did this because I wanted the panel to be sturdier and so that when you turned the belly band over, you didn’t see brown chipboard.)

ValentineGiftBoxBellyBand3

The other floral panel was glued to the top of the Majestic Labels One panel.  The heart was die cut from chipboard from Classic Hearts and then covered with coordinating paper that was die cut/embossed with Classic Hearts.

ValentineGiftBoxHeart

Using my new Silhouette Cameo, I cut out two panels of the xoxo cut file.  Once from the same pink cardstock and a slightly smaller version cut from another piece of coordinating MME paper.

ValentineGiftBoxSideBYSide

The belly band slides off all in one piece so that you can open the box.  After trying to dye umpteen different colors of seam binding in some form of pink, I finally gave up and found this green in my ribbon jar.  I don’t remember what colors of Distress Ink that it was dyed with, but I loved the way it pulled out the greens in the designer paper, so I used it.

ValentineGiftBoxAngle

That’s all for me right now.  Thanks for stopping by and joining me today!
