I decided this morning that I needed a challenge so I checked in on today’s Splitcoaststampers Sketch Challenge.  It has been forever since I’ve done any of the SCS Challenges and decided that I needed to get back to basics some.  You see, the daily challenges on Splitcoast were the first things I took part in after lurking on the site for a few months.  It’s where I developed my own style and learned so much about stamping.  There is nothing like a good challenge to get the daily mojo going!

When I saw today’s sketch, I knew immediately what paper I wanted to use and what colors.  I’ve had the BasicGrey Urban Prairie paper pad out on my desk for weeks, and until today I’ve not used it.  I feel that this card is a step outside the box for me.  There are no sponging, no brads and no ribbon.  There is some sanding though . . . I just couldn’t let those edges go!

SC216

The circles, the sentiment panel and the butterflies were die cut and embossed with Spellbinders Nestabilities and Shapeabilities.  I tried these butterflies a couple of different ways before I settled on stenciling them with Broken China Distress Ink.  You should have seen the mess I had when I used glitter . . . yuck.  To tone down the butterflies, I misted them with Broken China/Gold Distressed Pearlized Mist (or Shimmer Mist).

  1. That is just amazing to me how one can see a sketch and know what DP they will use. It must take a great mind and a serious artist to be able to do that. I applaud you, my dear.

  2. Hi Sherry ~ How pretty are your butterflies 🙂 Seems like their image has ~hatched~ again from their cacoons! You can never-ever go wrong with butterflies. Here is a Tale I hope you’ll enjoy ………….

A fond memory was a weekend at the cottage from when my brother and I were about 6-9 yrs. old ~ we had something called a “BugKeeper”, [a child’s toy] that was used to capture, study & release all the cool buggies that kids loved to watch. We found a caterpillar that was starting to change into a cacoon, so we made a “home” for it in the BugKeeper, using sticks and leaves, etc. Unfortunately, we returned to the City [home] for the week without the BugKeeper!! We were both so upset but my parents assured us the caterpillar would be fine because it was preparing to go to “sleep”. The entire week both my brother & I were anxious to return to the cottage to see our friend.

We returned six days later to find our BugKeeper, exactly where we left it in the cottage. To our bright eyes and amazement, this not-so-pretty caterpillar, had blossomed & flourished into a breathtaking Monarch Butterfly!

This was the best lesson in Life for my brother & I :0) We were just amazed and watched silently with our hearts full, as we released the Butterfly and he gracefully fluttered and flew into the sky.

Some (ahem) 35+ years (choke) later, I still recall that memory and emotion everytime I see a Monarch Butterfly =) Priceless.

This is great. I looked at the sketch (not that I had any time yesterday to do it) and drew a great big BLANK. I really like that sentiment too~I need to invest in more sentiments like that to use as a main image
